What is local and sustainable food?

The University of Michigan defines local food as food from with a 250 mile radius of the university.



Sustainable food, according to the university, is food that meets one of the following guidelines:

  • Locally grown
  • Certified as sustainable or organic by a third party
  • Hormone or antibiotic free
  • Free range chicken or eggs
  • Grass fed or pasture raised meats
  • Comes from a sustainable fishery
